Lung Cancer:
Lung cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the lungs. They typically start in the cells lining the bronchi and parts of the lung such as the bronchioles or alveoli.
Symptoms:
- Changes to a person’s voice, such as hoarseness
- Frequent chest infections, such as bronchitis or pneumonia
- Swelling in the lymph nodes in the middle of the chest
- A lingering cough
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing
Few other symptoms show up after sometime, namely,
- Severe chest pain
- Bone pain and bone fractures
- Headaches
- Coughing up blood
- Blood clots
- Appetite loss and weight loss
- Fatigue
Causes:
- Smoking
- Exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Previous radiation therapy
- Exposure to radon gas
- Exposure to asbestos and other carcinogens
- Family history of lung cancer
Preventing Lung Cancer:
- Stop smoking
- Avoid carcinogens at work
- Eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables
- Exercise most days of the week.
- Avoid exposure to occupational agents that are carcinogenic to the lungs
